Muskrats

Muskrats are small to medium-sized, semi-aquatic rodents native to most of North America. In Illinois, they can be found near any major river or water source. Golf course ponds, koi ponds, and other sources of water usually hold muskrats.

Muskrats that live along rivers primarily build dens in the bank. Muskrats that live in ponds will often construct huts similar in appearance to beaver lodges.

Muskrats undermine banks of rivers and ponds with their tunneling activity. This usually results in the bank collapsing, causing thousands in damage to repair. If you suspect you have muskrats do not wait! Give us a call to remedy the problem.

Yes, muskrats are aggressive and can be dangerous, and can carry rabies! Generally speaking, muskrats are pretty aggressive when it comes to other animals, but they are also known to be aggressive towards humans as well. They are particularly aggressive when they believe they’re protecting their home or their family. This means if you get too close there’s a good chance a muskrat will try to bite you. This can be especially worrying if you have young children or pets that are playing outdoors near these muskrats because they could get territorial. It’s advised that you let the professionals remove of them when spotted.
