Beaver
Beavers
Beavers are a large, semi-aquatic rodent native to most of North America. In Illinois, they can be found near any major river or water source. They weigh anywhere from 10-80+ pounds, and can live up to 15 years in the wild. Beavers that live along rivers primarily build dens in the bank. Beavers that live in ponds will often construct the iconic dams and lodge to live in.

Beaver Damage:

Chinchilla Wildlife Solutions

Beavers damage gardens and landscapes through flooding and the removal of plants. Valuable ornamental trees may be at risk near ponds or streams inhabited by beavers. Beaver ponds can provide short-term benefits to trout and other fish, but long-term negative impacts on streams are a concern.

Health & Safety Concerns

Beavers infected with rabies, which is very uncommon, may attack people. Beavers are hosts to several ectoparasites and internal parasites, including nematodes, trematodes, and coccidia.

Beavers contaminate water with Giardia lamblia, a pathogenic intestinal parasite that causes intestinal problems in humans. Floods undermine roads and interfere with septic systems. Bank dens cause the collapse of banks along farm and shoreline properties. Falling trees pose threats to structures, power lines, and people.
